The Grand Hotel Europe Charity Foundation was established in 2005 with a goal of giving to underprivileged children and youths an opportunity to develop and grow, to have decent living conditions and to have a chance to succeed in life.

To realize this goal, the Grand Hotel Europe has started a special program of hiring young girls from orphanages. We give them their first job, provide trainings and corresponding social benefits, keeping them away from the streets. We do monitor living conditions of the girls and help them to make their temporary home a nice place.

In 2005, the Grand Hotel Europe has launched the guest recognition program. Special VIP cards were distributed among our most loyal clients. 5% of each purchase of a Black VIP card holder and 3% of each purchase of a Gold VIP card holder is sent to our Charity Foundation.

Today 9 young ladies and gentlemen, who grew up in children’s homes, are working in different departments of the hotel.  The main aim was not simply to offer them a job, but the opportunity to build a career in the hotel business.  To further this aim, proceeds collected by the Charitable Fund in 2008 will be used to pay for five years of study for several employees at St. Petersburg State Engineering and Economics University, at the faculty of tourism and hotel management.

In 2007 Grand Hotel Europe started acting as a patron for orphanage in Nevskaya Dubrovka. In 2008 Grand Hotel Europe started cooperation with SOS Kindersdorf – Children’s Villages. Four children from SOS Kindersdorf are successfully working at Grand Hotel Europe. For SOS Kindersdorf children hotel provides tickets to theaters, circus, Philharmonia.

The hotel industry can and should be socially responsible, and should not limit itself to internal matters and the interests of a narrow group of visitors and guests.

The Grand Hotel Europe has always been and still remains the calling card of the city on the Neva and an integral part of city life.

Anastasia

Anastasia is 20 years old and works at Grand Hotel Europe since 17.07.2006. Her career started in the position of Chambermaid in the Housekeeping Department. She started to vacuum the long corridors but over time has achieved a lot. She became a true member of the team of Chambermaids, which consists of more than twenty women of different ages and backgrounds. After two years of hard work she was granted the award of “Best Chambermaid” that is given out monthly for the highest quality dictated in the standards of the Leading Hotels of the World, which Grand Hotel Europe is part of.

In Spring 2009 Nastya made a big step forward and tried herself in the most challenging restaurant of Grand Hotel Europe, the Summer Terrace. She found the new position as a server not easy, as firstly she didn’t have any experience in the Restaurant business and secondly more than half the guests speak only English. Knowing now how important it is to practice foreign languages, Nastya is taking part in English classes that all Grand Hotel Europe employees are provided with for free.

After the summer Anastasia chose to challenge herself once again and is now working in the position of Assistant Secretary in the HR Office under close supervision of the HR Manager and the General Manager. She is a great help for the team that is not prepared to part with her.

Yana

Yana is 20 years old and works at Grand Hotel Europe since 17.07.2006. Her career started in the kitchen, in the pastry subdivision. During the first months she learned the basic skills from the Pastry Chefs in the position of Assistant Commis. After 18 months Yana had acquired all necessary skills and was promoted to the position of Commis that she is still holding up to today.

Yana likes the kitchen, her work and especially the young dynamic team that is lead by great professionals who have received several prizes during the last years such as First Prize and Grand Prize of Golden Kulina, as well as Grand Prize of Pir contest.

Nadejda

Nadja joint the Grand Hotel Europe team on 29.05.2007. The 22 year trained tailor was hired into the position commis in the pastry subdivision. After a short probation period she understood, that the kitchen is not the right place for her. She changed her workplace and is working ever since as a laundress in the Housekeeping department. The house laundry is one of the places, where one needs team spirit and a great sense for accuracy.  The professionals among the laundresses and supervisors have taught Nadja all it takes to become a skilled and experienced member of the strong team of 20 women. Nadja has taken six months leave of absence to take care of her and her son’s health.

Natalia

Natalia was the third young lady who was admitted to work through the Grand Hotel Europe employment program. She showed interest in languages and the especially the kitchen department. Natalia was hired on 12.12.2006 in the position Commis in the Pastry subdivision. After 18 months she was chosen by the former French Executive Chef of the hotel, Dominique Ferchaud, to join the team of Chocolatiers at the Grand Hotel Europe’s very own Chocolate Factory. Since then Natalia creates together with her team-members more than 35 kinds of “Dominique’s Chocolates”, the finest pralines of St Petersburg.

Natalia, the 20 year old Primary School teacher is studying to become a speech therapist at Herzen University of St Petersburg in four years time.

Varya

Varya is 16 years old. She began working at the Grand Hotel Europe on May 5, 2009, as a florist’s assistant. At this age, people often don’t yet know what job they would like to do in the future, and any experience is useful in helping them to choose a profession. Varya took to working in the young, creative team of the hotel’s florists like a duck to water. Who knows, perhaps one day she will become a famous florist! Varya has learnt how to create floral compositions, look after flowers and plant them outside. These skills will come in useful for Varya in the future — after all, a good hostess has to know how to decorate their home. Varya is studying at a design and technology college.

Natalya Yakovleva, head of housekeeping services at the Grand Hotel Europe, evaluated Varya’s work in the hotel as follows: “At 15 years old, people often don’t yet know what job they would like to do in the future, and any experience is useful in helping them to choose a profession. Varya took to working in the young, creative team of the hotel’s florists like a duck to water. Who knows, perhaps one day she will become a famous florist!”

An SOS Children’s Village mother is neither a biological nor adoptive mother, but becomes, as one of our young wards said, “one’s own dearest mother,” because she loves the child, helps them, and takes away all their cares and troubles.

Elena Vasilyevna is the SOS mother of Varya. “I am very pleased that Varya is taking part in the Grand Hotel Europe’s project to provide jobs for our children. For me, it is very important to know that it’s a specific place of work, I know and understand where Varya is working and for how long, and what her duties are. Working as a florist’s assistant allows Varya to find out many new and interesting things. Naturally, Varya gets tired; this was particularly noticeable at the beginning, but everyone in our SOS family is very understanding of Varya’s new regime. The younger children are envious of their sister!”

Varya

Varya is 19 years old. She has worked as a chef in the confectionary department of the Grand Hotel Europe since July 11, 2008. Varya’s work at the hotel couldn’t have matched her personal and professional interests more closely, for she is studying at a culinary college. She is very responsible, tries hard and is highly motivated to achieve top results. Varya had no trouble in integrating into the team, and dreams of setting up her own confectionary shop in the future!

Elena Taran is Varya’s SOS mother: “She is an adult now, and has moved out of our family home to the SOS Young People’s Home in St. Petersburg. It couldn’t have worked out better, since she is studying to be a chef. The chance for Varya to work in such a prestigious place is a perfect opportunity of her to get excellent practical training in her area of study. I am very happy for Varya!”

Sasha, 12, is Varya’s SOS brother: “I would also like to work in such a beautiful place as Varya does, learn something new and earn some money myself.”

Nastya

Nastya started working as a chef in the confectionary department of the Grand Hotel Europe on August 11, 2008. She worked there for a year, during which she learnt a lot. In the summer of 2009, Nastya and Anatoly Ivanov, a chef from the Grand Hotel Europe, took part in an international project to create a cookery book from various countries all over the world. Nastya helped Anatoly to prepare Russian dishes. The presentation of the Family Cookery Book took place at the international book fair in Frankfurt in October 2009. Nastya is now 17, and in her second year of studying law at college. Since her academic timetable now includes new, complex subjects that take up a significant part of Nastya’s time, she and the hotel together agreed that she should focus on her studies.

Valya

Valentina is 20 years old. She began working at the Grand Hotel Europe on March 20, 2008 as a laundry assistant. Working in the laundry is hard and requires responsibility. Naturally, at first Valya encountered certain difficulties, but, since she takes her work seriously and uses her initiative, she successfully overcame these difficulties. According to her immediate supervisor, Valya willingly takes on extra responsibilities, always helps her colleagues and is a fast learner. Thanks to these qualities, Valentina got the opportunity to obtain work experience in the financial department of the Grand Hotel Europe, since she is currently a student at a finance and economics university. Valya’s dedication and her readiness to work hard will undoubtedly guarantee her a highly promising career.

Natalya Yakovleva, head of housekeeping services at the Grand Hotel Europe, says: “Valya is a sweet, good-hearted girl who willingly takes on extra responsibilities, always helps her colleagues and is a fast learner. In the opinion of the laundry supervisor, she has a very promising career ahead of her.”
